Happy Veterans Day!

Once again it's that day where we remember our Veterans. On a whim I pulled out my "Cracker Jacks" out of the closet and tried them on. Here are the results.

Not too shabby if I do say so myself...considering I retired in 1994 (24 years ago)! The picture I'm holding is my boot-camp picture taken when I was 18 years old....FORTY YEARS AGO!

I am however out of uniform here...no ribbons, medals or hat. I could have taken apart my shadow box for ribbons and medals, but that would be a lot of work. I was just interested to see if I could still fit, and I was (not saying I didn't stress-test those bell bottom pants buttons tho). I will be down in Los Angeles (for work) most of January and into Feb most likely, and will make a trip down to San Diego Naval Station and pick up a new Dixie Cup hat, and maybe a set of ribbons so I don't have to take apart my shadow box. Then NEXT YEAR I will do a fully uniformed shot.

Anyway, HAPPY VETERANS DAY to all those out there who have worn a uniform, and especially to those wounded or killed over the centuries...they are the ones who MADE AMERICA GREAT!

(on a side note, Jeannie took me out to Denny's for breakfast today.....woo-hoo!) I've been teasing her like FOREVER as she sleeps in every Veterans Day while THE VETERAN gets up and goes to work...so I FINALLY got a V-Day breakfast out of her! Oh, I know what you're thinking....what did I order you ask?

The Cinnamon Bun pancake slam! This is ALMOST a before shot...my pancakes were late so I had already started on the bacon, eggs and hash browns. The pancakes have the cinnamon bun crunchy stuff baked right into the pancakes...YUM!!!!

And this is of course the After shot. Done and DONE!
(and I STILL fit into my dress uniform after this!)

Sadly Denny's doesn't offer their "Free" Grand Slam breakfast to Vets TODAY (actual Veterans Day), only tomorrow. That just seems wrong...but I guess they won't have to give away nearly as many that way, as MOST vets are still working. We WERE going to go to IHOP as THEY were giving the free vet meal today, but of course they were "slammed" so we called the audible and went to Dennys and Jeannie bought (thanks again Jeannie!).

After breakfast we ran around stopping at other places giving free things to Vets...I got a free cup of coffee at Starbucks, a free "Hot and Ready" pizza and a soda at Little Caesars, and a free donut (which I will take to work tomorrow for my break snack) at Dunkin Donuts. There are likely a few other places but I have things to do today. Anyway it was fun to actually get to partake in a few of the "thank you to vets" specials for a change!

OK. I'm off to do my Sunday chores. Veterans Day or not I've got things that need doing today.

Later gaters!

Cheers!

  1. So here I am AT WORK on Veterans Day (Observed)...but at least I can console myself with my FREE donut I'm about to inhale (got it yesterday at Dunkin Donuts) and FREE Pepperoni Hot n Ready Pizza (also from yesterday at Little Caesars). I did drink my FREE coffee from Starbucks yesterday as we were running around taking care of biz (we went to Lowes where we got an ADDITIONAL 20% off of a living room area rug we bought a few weeks ago...it wasn't on sale then but is now, and they honor the sale for a month back if you bring in your rec't...GO JEANNIE!). The base is a ghost town today...but we still have work of course (Gov contractor). At least we aren't on FIRE up here...in fact, our weather is pretty beautiful here on the Central Coast! The insane Santa Anna winds don't typically affect us, which is odd considering we have wind the OTHER 350 days a year. Happy Veterams Day!

  2. Tweeeeeeet! (I'm whistling at you) you sure do look SPIFFY! You've always been in such fantastic shape even while wolfing down Grand Slam breakfasts that I'm beyond jealous! :) :) Do your brothers have metabolisms like yours or are you one-of-a-kind? :)

Sorry that I've been absent for so long. October has been a tough month for me for many years & now with the "anniversary" of my dad's death, then funeral, then what would have been his birthday, I guess it will be even worse. Anyhoo, I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE SAFE! The more I kept seeing & reading about those fires, the more worried I've been. Those poor people! Please take care & if the fires start coming your way, GET OUT, DON'T WAIT! It seems many of those that perished were in their cars trying to get away too late. I saw a video of some family driving out & it was a MIRACLE they escaped, it was unbelievable! And it is funny that Santa Annas don't seem to affect you much since you have wind the rest of the time! When you move to the East coast, at least you won't have to worry about annual Fall fires & earthquakes anymore. However, 7 years ago we DID have an earthquake! I was having physical issues at the time & had a Dr's apt that day when all of a sudden, the walls & floor & my desk started rumbling & shaking! I thought I was having a stroke or something because I could NOT imagine it was the building & that we were having an earthquake! At least with a hurricane, you get a couple days notice to get out!

So, your Michigan team is doing great! (Sorry about the Raiders, though.) It looks like it will come down to the Big Game, where I will be, ahem, rooting for your nemesis. Sorry! :) I haven't watched much CFB this year but I keep track of the Top 20 winners & losers each week & watch ND & OSU when I can. Honestly, I never thought Mich would be where they are now after the 1st game, so good on them. And hurray for you!

I didn't know about the freebies for vets but I think it's great! Are they for things besides food? For example, all vets should get to ride public transportation for free that day. What do you think?

    1. Hey Susie...I think my metabolism is a 1 of a kind (or that 45' tapeworm that I've been harboring for most of my life). As to THE GAME, I think (hope hope) that THIS is the year that Michigan finally regains their pride and spanks OSU right in their home turf. We've finally got the team to do it. And there will be TWO big games...cuz Georgia has to play Bama for the SEC...if we both win, which team will get the #4 spot and a ticket to the BCS playoff? Both teams are very well matched, with nearly identical strength of schedule and wins. If one of the 2 loses then that is the deciding game and the winner goes. Should they BOTH lose (GASP!), maybe Oklahoma who is waiting in the wings gets the nod...it will be interesting for sure! Of all the teams, Clemson has the weakest schedule (only played 2 ranked teams all season) so not totally sure that they deserve the #2 slot...just imo.

  3. And I LOVED LOVED LOVED your photos & write-up of Halloween! The "girls" were adorable! And my goodness, 173 kids! 173! I've NEVER known of anyone else who gets that many trick-or-tweeters, I bet your house with the costumed doggies is famous in the neighborhood! :) :)

How are Abbey & Sophie getting along these days? Have you noticed any change as they age? Still feisty/jealous over food? Well, at least they get along the rest of the time, right?

And hey, I LIKE DST (at least until November)! It keeps the darkness at bay for the summer evenings & I love that.

Can you believe it's almost Thanksgiving, then Xmas, then end of the year? Actually, this year has DRAGGED for me & I don't know what I'll do for Xmas. Last year I went home & it was just awful. Now, since mom doesn't live on the farm, I have no "home" to go home to. What are your plans for the holidays? Coming east to your brother-in-law's farm again for Turkey Day? If you do, please take lots of photos! :)

And hey, Rae, I hope you're doing well! What are you up to now? You were SO BUSY with all your house projects, my goodness it is impressive!

Alrighty, I have to go but I hope to be back soon! I want to talk investing! :)

    1. As to the girls...they get along mostly...but occasionally they have it out (such as this morning at 12:30am...there was a 30sec scuffle and then I kick them both out of the bedroom...they HATE that, such is their punishment for fighting). They are both SUPER feisty/protective of any molecules of food that might be available. And turf...they are like the Crips and the Bloods when they get up on the bed...you don't invade the others turf w/out expecting a fight. But otherwise they are BFF's.

As to Thanksgiving, we fly to Richmond next Tuesday (WOW!) I'll be wearing my Wolverines colors cuz we will watch THE GAME that Saturday.

As to investing...I'm getting pretty killed in my 401k right now...but hey, I'm in for the long haul (well, 4 more years anyway). Gotta run...

  4. Well...Michigan won their 2nd to last game (Indiana). So now it all comes down to THE GAME next Saturday! And HOLY SMOKES...Susie, your Terps almost beat OSU today!!! Maybe they wanted a close one to motivate them next weekend...I'm still sad they lost to Purdue (well, not really)...but I WAS hoping they'd still be undefeated and WE would be their first loss, and WIN the Big Ten in the process! Oh well..WHEN the Mighty Wolverines win the game IN Columbus, it will be OH SO SWEET!! We are WAY OVERDUE! Go BLUE!!!

    1. I could NOT BELIEVE IT! The Terps aren't exactly setting the CFB world on fire this year (or, ahem, ever) so for the Buckeyes to ALMOST lose to them is still a shock! I think losing Nick Bosa for the year really decimated their defense, both in terms of play but also possibly for leadership. And you're right, this is Michigan's year (ahem, finally ;) to beat OSU. IF Michigan loses oh boy, that would be a kick to the teeth!

At least my "other team" is ND & they're having a FANTASTIC season! If they don't all come down with food poisoning this Saturday, they should have no trouble with USC & then be in the Playoff. And here's hoping they don't play Bama until the NCG. I'm still having flashbacks from 2012-2013 when they were undefeated all season & then played godawful against Bama in the NCG. The only NCG worse was the year before when LSU barely made it even once across the 50 yard line against Bama! Hands down, THE WORST championship game I've ever seen in any sport!

Whoops, gotta run! If I don't get back here to chat before you fly off to VA, have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. Dropped in to say Happy Thanksgiving day to all and sundry!
I started the day walking/ trotting the Flying Feather 4 Miler along with 3500 of my dear friends -- all except my daughter, who bailed with a migraine. It was 27F at the start line but had warmed with a little sun breaking through (you know, we residents of C-bus kind of forget what sunshine is in the wintertime...). Daughter & I had already planned to have our dinner tomorrow, since she didn't get home from work until 2am & was planning to just stay up for the run.

Susie, I do empathize with the feeling of not having "home" to return to; it's been that way for me since I was 15. I have 4 siblings and have heard from only one in the past year (a "blended" family that didn't). It has been that way for years. Of course my parents are both gone also. So, I have made the point of doing some things like the 4 miler, or a hike in the woods, and go to a church if I can find one that is having a service -- things to make the day special to me even if not necessarily how the majority in our society does it. And, I don't watch football! I do hope you had a great day with your mother!

We are supposed to actually have 2 days of normal temperatures this weekend, so I will be spending them hauling the truckload of leaves that I had the city dump in my driveway to the back yard, some to pile around the blueberry & cherry bushes, kiwi vines, and apple trees that are growing in pots, the rest in the flower beds and compost pile. And also cleaning leaves off the gutter covers. I had hoped the new gutters with covers would eliminate this chore, but no...I will have to go out a window onto the garage roof. Then I will be DONE with the outdoor chores for the next 4 months! Don't worry, I still have plenty of things on my to-do list -- that basement, for example.

Matt, I hope you had a good trip east and a safe return! And plenty of turkey & fixings! Even my diehard OSU fan friends are disgusted with the OSU defense this year and muttering about coaches that need to be fired -- I can just imagine what they will be like on Sunday morning, if your team who must not be named should do the unthinkable!
