I'm a busy guy. Between hanging out with the family, bike riding, dog walking, building and launching spacecraft, world-travel, watching bike races and everything in-between, you'll find it all here. Come on in and pull up a chair, you'll find NOTHING too inane to discuss in my lair. Welcome to the Asylum!

Tolerance
So...as we wait to hear who our next President will be (and life goes on), I tried to take my mind off the current state of things and found this over at BikeSnobNYC's blog...(he is a very gifted writer and his post today really struck a chord...so I am shamelessly re-posting part of it here as it's way better than anything I could write to say the same things).
"like everyone else, I woke up this morning slightly anxious that we still don’t know who will be the next President of the Canada’s Saddlebag of America, and that this Schrödinger-esque situation could persist for some time. But, as always happens, I felt better about it all just as soon as I threw a leg over the bike and started pedaling. Oh sure, maybe it’s just the endorphins talking, or maybe I’m painfully naive, but here’s why this may be the best possible outcome given our current cultural moment:
No matter which side we’re on, too many of us think we’re absolutely right. We think the other candidate is a Nazi, or a Communist, as the case may be. But in truth nobody’s absolutely right–about this, or about anything. (Yes, of course you can be absolutely right about some things, but not about mundane stuff such as which old guy gets to be President for the next four years.) Yet a swift and decisive win for either one of those old guys instantly allows millions of people to think that millions of other people–the same people with whom they share a country, maybe even a town or a street or an apartment building–are not just wrong but inherently bad. And yes, while winning feels good, thinking you’re absolutely right and good and that your neighbor is absolutely wrong and bad is really no way to live.
But instead, here we are in a situation where, no matter who ends up winning, it’s obviously pretty close. Maybe this is a gift. I see people lamenting this result as a symptom of our “deeply divided” country, but what if it’s a good thing in that every single one of us is now forced to reconcile ourselves to the possibility that the other guy could win? No more voting, no more phone banking, no more driving around with a giant flag on your pickup…unless you’re a ballot counter or a lawyer for one of the candidates or a Supreme Court justice or something all you can really do at this point and sit on your ass and wait.
And while we sit and wait, we can begin to let go of some fear and anxiety and allow ourselves to entertain the notion that no matter who wins it’s all going to be okay. We’re still extraordinarily lucky to live in the time and the place we do–maybe the luckiest humans yet to have lived. We can choose to believe a certain result means we’ll all perish imminently due to climate change, or live forevermore in some kind of Orwellian cancel culture nightmare. Or we can acknowledge that we live in a not-perfect but ever-evolving place where most us just want the best for ourselves and the people we love–and, more importantly, where that is an eminently attainable goal. That doesn’t mean forfeiting being passionate about our beliefs, or that we should be complacent, but it does mean at a certain point we have to accept that others feel just as passionately about things with which we disagree.
If we allow ourselves to realize this, maybe we’ll be so busy hugging each other and rejoicing in our newfound humanity that we won’t even notice when they finally announce a winner".
OK...I now relinquish the floor back to Vuelta-talk.

Just fyi, I've tried like 5 times to put in the paragraph separations...and Blogger simply won't let me...so it's just all just one big blob (er, blog? Hmmm...maybe that's where name "blog" came from...people putting big blobs on the internet).
ReplyDeleteSo, basically the guy is saying "let's all hug it out & everything will be hunky dory"? Ohhhhh, HELL NO! That's why we're in this mess - the Dems didn't acknowledge the growing rage of the "blue collar working class" for DECADES & let what once was part of THEIR base be co-opted by their opponent. Nor did they calculate the almost incomprehensible CORRUPTION & GASLIGHTING of the populace by the CANCER that is Fox 'News' & Facebook. Not only have those entities allowed the nonstop LYING of a SOCIOPATH for the past 4 years, they expand on it, convincing millions that Biden is either a feeble old man hobbled by dementia or a raving socialist....set to do what exactly? They have no idea but Fox News & FB have terrified them into a state of total panic & anger so that they continue to rationalize & excuse a NARCISSISTIC LYING PIECE OF SHIT SOCIOPATH/SERIAL ADULTERER/ATHEIST/TAX CHEAT ON A MASSIVE SCALE/SERIAL FEMALE HARASSER & PROBABLE RAPIST/BULLY/MOST CORRUPT OCCUPANT IN THE WH OF ALL TIME.
ReplyDeleteThat the Dems did not take back the Senate & have even seen a lessening of their majority in the House means the country will continue it's death spiral. That bastard McConnell & his fellow NAZIs will block every single thing Biden tries to do. Of course, since they allowed precedent by the SOCIOPATH, Biden will just have to rely on Executive Order after Executive Order. (1st EO should be to abolish the abominable Electoral College once & for all!)
This is NOT hyperbole - the Republican Party was co-opted & corrupted & has now become the American NAZI Party. If we don't FIGHT & DEFEAT them now, the USA as a democratic republic is over.
I like Michelle Obama but her political philosophy of only "taking the high road" was & is DISASTROUS to the Democrats & this country. You don't defeat NAZIs by taking the freakin high road. You have to DESTROY THEM.
500,000 Australians have signed a petition to investigate Rupert Murdock's cancerous & fascist media empire. THEY have the right idea. That bastion of lies needs to be dismantled & then maybe everyone in the country will start learning the TRUTH & the United States of America can survive.
Seriously Susie...you need to stop beating around the bush and just say what you mean...you hide your what you are actually saying so well that I really have to carefully dissect what you said to discern your true feelings (GRIN!!).
ReplyDeleteActually Susie you me of the Dennis Miller Rants that he used to do (started on SNL I think on Weekend Update, and then didn't he have his own show for a while there after SNL?)...remember those? He was fantastic!
ReplyDeleteAlso I do have to fess up: when I hit "post" I was thinking "Susie will have something to say about that one!"
ReplyDeleteOh, and hey...the BIKE RACE?? Remember THAT?? Kind of boring today, just ANOTHER DAY of OVER 14,000' of climbing...man they've done a TON of climbing in this one! Bad weather at the finish, they took the finish time 3k from the finish (to keep the peleton from having to ride like mad thru the twisty wet roads on the run-in)...good decision to the commissars! The peleton mostly sat up at 3k while those interested in the sprint were free to fly...and due to the hugely reduced group there was no problems...whew! So no change in the GC standings. Only THREE STAGES TO GO!!
ReplyDeleteKind of a boring day at the Vuelta today...but a good finish...after a bit over 8k' climbing it was a peleton sprint finish. Magnus Cort Nielson from EF Education took the sprint...and amazingly, ROGLIC slipped in for 2nd netting him 6 precious bonus seconds! That puts him up by 45 seconds on Carapaz...sneaky riding by Roglic! Man, that guy can do it all!
ReplyDeleteHoly crap..what a day!
ReplyDeleteFirst, this morning it was announced that Biden/Harris did win the election! Took THREE DAYS to determine this...how close is THAT. Wow!
OK...had all day to let that soak in...and THEN...the 2nd to last Stage of la Vuelta...and what a doozy!! Just ANOTHER stage with OVER 14,000' of climbing! And everything seemed quite tame until about 4k to go on the final climb (mt top finish of course)...Carapaz ATTACKS! Rode away from Roglic, again struggling..boy, the weekends were NOT kind to him this race! Roglic had one teammate who was up front, Sepp Kus dropped off not long after the attack, having done what he could all day (and nobody can take anything away from that super-young man, he had an AMAZING race!)...when things were looking grim his teammate pulled for just a bit and Roglic regained a bit of time, and there were enough finishers ahead of Carapaz that there were no time-bonuses left. And finally, Carapaz crossed the line, and then Roglic comes across...losing 21 seconds, so he still elads by 24 seconds! HOLY SMOKES!!!
So tomorrow they ride into Madrid for the ceremonial finish...where unless disaster strikes (a flat tire in the wrong place?) Roglic will win by the super-narrow margin of 24 seconds! I don't think he will get much sleep tonight...so much could happen...he still has to stay WITH Carapaz up-to the last 3K to hold his win. What an awesome 2nd to last stage in this shorted race! WHEW!!! I was holding my breath that final 3k I think! To have this race yanked out from under him at the last second...well, he already knows what that feels like!
Sunday, and the peleton finished safely in Madrid with Roglic winning his 2nd consecutive Vuelta! It was a photo-finish for the sprint, with Ackermann of Bora taking the day by a tires width or 2 over Sam Bennett of Quick Step. I'm sure at the 3k spot there were a lot of sighs of relief from all the GC guys.
ReplyDeleteCarapaz finished 2nd overall maintaining his 24 second deficit, and Carthy finished 3rd (he was under a minute at the start of the day, but they show him 1:15 down after the stage...maybe he fell out of the front group and finished back a bit, they haven't shown/said). And Dan Martin finished 4th down 2:43, his best Grand Tour finish.
The KOM jersey goes to Guillame Martin of Cofids, with an insurmountable lead of 3 times the points of the next closest rider Tim Wellens. And the White jersey goes to Enrique Mas of Movistar, which also claimed the Team competition (again). Remy Cavaugna of Quick Step takes the Most Combative rider for the race...that had to be tough as there were certainly others who were very close in consideration.
And so we close this MAD 2020 cycling season. Lots of riders switching teams next year, of note is Chris Froome moving to Israel Start-up Nation after riding for Skyy/Ineos his entire pro career. Of note is the young American Will Barta who took 2nd on the ITT to Roglic by JUST ONE SECOND! He is currently without a contract for next year...I'd think that will quickly change as he is obviously a rider for the future with amazing TT skills! It will be interesting to see who comes up with a contract for him...will it be on one of the Pro Tour teams? Sure hope so...he will obviously be one to watch in the coming years. As will Sepp Kus...what a young talent he has shown himself to be!
For the moment that's about all I can think of. Gotta get busy doing chores (it's COLD and WINDY out..winter has struck! How does it always know when the weekend is for storms? We actually had RAIN Friday night and off/on yesterday! That's the first rain we've had in a LONG TIME. And sure we need it, but it really screwed up my riding comeback...I was hoping to do a long hard road-ride this weekend. I don't even want to go out to mow or walk the monsters it's so windy and cold! OK...another weekend almost gone. Christmas is coming...FAST. Later gators!
Hey Matt, I'm still trying to "process" Saturday's stage. Watching Roglic being dropped by a runaway Carapaz in the final 3k produced 2 reactions in me - 1st, had Carapaz ridden like that in ANY other stage in this race? It kills me to say my 1ST thought was a blood transfusion the night before. He barely looked like he was breathing hard! 2nd, I was almost inconsolable with the idea that Roglic would lose a 2nd Grand Tour in the same year on the penultimate day AND that I was watching it! I mean, OH MY GOD! I sat dumbfounded on my couch just begging Roglic to spin those pedals! Except for the hellish weather day when the team mistimed the rain jacket swaps, Roglic had always looked the strongest in the race. Did his body finally rebel after two Grand Tours less than 2 months apart where he didn't just participate in both but dominated each until those specific days? Does he have a psychological issue with penultimate days in a race? Should he have NOT tried so hard (possibly gone into the red) the day before to gain that 6 second bonus in a sprint?
ReplyDeleteBUT, at least he was able to contain the time loss & ended up still far enough ahead that he would win the Vuelta for the 2nd year in a row! Thank goodness as *I* couldn't have handled it if not!
And I'm really sad you weren't able to watch/listen to the Olympic Channel broadcast with Bobke & CVV as they were great, the best they'd ever been together. Maybe you can contact your cable company about getting the Olympic Channel next year if the Vuelta is carried again. This year's was the most they've ever broadcast. The previous years we got about 2 hours each day, usually just the last 50k.
And hey Rae, thanks for the election info about Ohio. I must admit that Ohio perplexes me. With their multiple urban areas (which usually vote Democrat), you'd think it'd be a blue state. And what you say about your former coworkers being concerned about "socialism" is all Fox News. I'm so angry when I hear people say they are "against socialism" WITHOUT knowing what the hell they are really saying! But hey, if they don't want THEIR Social Security or Medicare when they retire one day, that will save this country trillions! Buh-bye! Off the "socialism rolls" they go. AND since they're apparently fine with insurance companies not having to insure those with preexisting conditions, kick them off insurance if THEY have a PC. Let them ask the GOP for money to pay for their cancer/heart attack/hip replacement. Good luck with that. ;)
Back to cycling. Yesterday was bittersweet as it was the final day of pro (road) cycling for the year. The good news is that it starts up again (hopefully) in only 4 months! :)
Gotta scoot.
I heard that the Tour Down-Under has already been cancelled for the upcoming season (usually it's the first race, in January). And I have to think that the entire spring Classics season is still in jeopardy...
DeleteAnd speaking of Jeopardy...did you hear Alex Trebek passed away this last weekend? Wow...I thought he had beat his Stage 4 pancreatic cancer...he fought it for 2 years...typically that cancer kills pretty much all the time (cuz it's one of those you don't know you've got till it's too late). He was really something and will be missed. His voice to Jeopardy is like P&P were to cycling.
Very sad about Alex Trebek but he actually lived far longer than I thought he would with that diagnosis. Do you remember Michael Landon? (Little House on the Prairie, Bonanza, that 'Angel' show). He announced he had Pancreatic cancer on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson & it seemed he was dead barely a few weeks later. I don't know which cancer is the "most" fatal, but this one must be in the top 5. Were you aware of his age before his death? I hadn't realized he was that old. During the last few years I hadn't watched Jeopardy as much as I once did, but he will be missed! :(
ReplyDeleteHas your company changed anything at work now that the COVID numbers are even WORSE than March & April? I am just as scared if not more so than I was then. Meanwhile, the SOCIOPATH in the WH & his NAZI collaborators in Congress & his pathetic "administration" do NOTHING! Anyone who voted for that piece of shit a 2nd time share responsibility.
Have a great weekend & stay safe!
I really had no idea how old Alex T was (he sure didn't look nor act like he was that old). I also am not sure which cancer is MOST deadly, but I thought pancreatic was near the top (mostly due to the fact that when you know you have it, it's already too late...much like colon and ovarian which took our Mom).
ReplyDeleteWork hasn't changed one iota (due to Covid) since we returned from FL back in late March...er, that's not true, when we came back from FL they split our numbers by going to two shifts...we stopped that back in June (when we were getting ready to head to Boulder/Denver) and we haven't gone back...so actually we are less defensive rather than more.
