Tour Talk 1

And so, the 2025 edition of le Tour is underway! As I type the Stage 5 ITT is happening (it's still pretty early in the day). The first week has been hard to watch all of each stage, as it's all been pretty much 'sprint' stages, mostly pretty boring until the last 15k or so.

Obviously there have been crashes...most notably was when Alpecin lost their sprinter Jasper Philipsen (Stage 3 I think), who was taken out in the bunch sprint having done nothing wrong other than being next to guys that were doing the argy-bargy. Bobke said they were probably over 60kpm when it happened, all I know was that it was very sad, when he didn't get up and they finally took him on a stretcher you know it was bad...I think they said broken collarbone, the typical cycling damage other than road-rash (and he got a bunch of that too). He wasn't in Yellow that stage, his teammate Van der Poel (one of his primary leadout men) was, tho he had on Stage 2 having won the day on Stage 1.

Today SHOULD be Remco's to lose... holding the current World AND Olympic ITT wins as well as the crushing he did on both Pogo and Vingo in the Dauphine a few weeks ago, and that it's nearly totally flat, means he SHOULD be on fire (and to gain back some of the 58 seconds he's down).

As usual, the NBC/Peacock team is first rate...and exactly the same as last year from what I remember (it was a winning format, why change it?) Phil and Bobke in the trailer somewhere near the finish line doing the play by play, CVDV on the back of the Moto IN the race, Paul, TJ and Brent back in the Studio (in the US somewhere, NOT in France), and finally Steve Porino somewhere out on the days route giving us fun insights and info on people and places the race goes by. Bobke was at his usual hilarious this morning talking about how he was riding out on the TT route when Remco went by him (like he was standing still) and then Vingo...his sounds, antics and facial expressions is a huge part of what we love about him!

It's quite a race so far, with Van der Poel still in Yellow, but Pogo and Vingo are just seconds behind...I'd assume either Pogo or Vingo will be in Yellow tonight, tho if Remco has a beast of a ride today it's a real possibility HE could be in Yellow...wouldn't THAT be something! I will say that it's great to see Vingo uninjured and looking like he's at his best....hoping those 2 fight it out all the way to Paris nipping at each others heels!

Going to post this and go watch the ITT, the 'interesting guys are getting close to being out on the course.

It's now Thursday morning as I type, coffee in hand, Stage 6 on the Telly, and I'm in my Happy Place! The ITT yesterday certainly didn't disappoint, holy moly! My takeaways: Remco didn't exactly torch the course like he did in the Dauphine (tho he was still FANTASTIC and rode a pretty flawless route!), Pogo rode a very inspired race, and Vingo just collapsed, you could see it mile after mile like his power was just weeping away (he lit out of the starting block like gangbusters, and it was just a slow motion train wreck from there). I actually felt terrible for him, he seemed so full of promise in the early stages, showing he was going to hang with Pogo and give him a race. In the GC he basically switched places with Remco who is now in 2nd.

They are riding right thru Normandie this morning, and there are LOTS AND LOTS of graves in the memorial cemeteries for the WWII fallen soldiers...that brings lots of emotions to the surface, SO MANY guys didn't come home, and yet we live in the world they provided by their sacrifice (and the race literally rolling thru Normandie is a testament to that sacrifice). Nazi occupied France...it's still so hard to imagine that possible history had the allied forces not prevailed, Europe (and the world) would be a radically different place.

OK, enough of that train of thought, it's depressing. Back to THE RACE! And WHAT A RACE!

So Ben Healy just finished the stage for the win (his FIRST Bob said? Is that possible?), and I think I was grinning like an idiot for the last 15 miles watching him continue to increase his gap against the entire breakaway all the way to the line, it was amazing! Quinn Simmons took 2nd on the day (USA, USA!) and hey, the newcomer American on Movistar Will Barta takes 6th in his FIRST Tour! Hole cats, what a great day! I loved this stage...6 categorized climbs (5 Cat 3's and a Cat 4 just before the line) really spread out the peleton leaving plenty of room for a breakaway to succeed, and it did! And can't take away anything from Vander Poel...he got in the break (which was NO EASY TASK today) and it seems he'd wiped himself out just doing that, but he wasn't in it for the stage win but to try to take back Yellow that he lost yesterday...and it seems like he did it! YES! They just posted the GC, he's in front of Pogo by ONE SECOND! OMG, what a race! I LOVE IT! Quite honestly, good for Pogo to let it slip away (he even mentioned it last night apparently in on of the interviews), very out of character for him in years past...he's maturing into the leader now, so tomorrow (another hard stage, but aren't they all?) he doesn't have to wipe out the team defending Yellow. There will be PLENTY of days ahead for that, as we all know he WILL take back the Jersey, maybe even tomorrow. Gosh what a day, loved watching it, and the commentary was fantastic (as usual!). Oh, and one final thought on that subject...have you noticed that somebody must have been working with TJ, because he hasn't been doing the "Uhm"s over and over again like every year back that I can recall (his post stage interviews when he was still racing just made me cringe!) Well done TJ!!! The fact that I JUST realized that I haven't been hearing the Uhms over and over hit me like a brick. Very well done TJ! That's not an easy thing to do (I went thru Instructor School OH SO LONG AGO in the Navy, and then taught a mainframe computer class for the next 4 years...and I know in that 1 month school they try to eliminate all the annoying things like that, but it's not easy). I'm so impressed, I know the banter between him, Brent and Paul is always interesting, and his new insight by being management for Team EF gives him serious insider knowledge that's up a step from the rest of the rider/commentators (he even picked Neilsson Powless as his winner today, right team, wrong guy...but oh so close!) OK, on to my non-Tour pile of stuff to do. Boy it's GREAT not HAVING to really do anything during le Tour...I get to just sit and drink coffee and eat snacks and watch the stages...ahhh, life is great!

    1. Hey Susie, welcome welcome, was wondering how you were doing! Boy oh boy was TODAYS stage fantastic! I think I injured myself rooting Ben Healy on towards his chance at the Yellow jersey! That was historic!!! He wins his FIRST TDF Stage 4 days ago, and now gets the Yellow jersey thru his OWN efforts! I was SO thankful Pogo nor Vingo didn't go crazy on the final climb trying to gap each other...that they sat behind Martinez and didn't even pass him at the line, I thought that was very cool of both of them! Usually when they show the finish line we can see the clock counting up since the winner...not so today, so when Simon Yates crossed the line (way to go Simon!) I started counting (wasn't prepared with a stopwatch, will have to fix that!) and I did the numbers and was thinking he had Yellow by 30 seconds (he got a 4 second time bonus for 3rd on the stage)...boy was I close...officially it's 29 seconds!! And hey, they kind of glossed over this, but Ben ALSO moved into the White jersey! I didn't even realize he was that young...seems like we've been hearing about him forever! Taking that away from Evenpoel...that's quite an accomplishment in it's own right! And Martinez got the Polka Dots for his efforts today, thought that was cool too! And Vingo even pulled back a few seconds on Remco too! That only Vingo could go with (and STAY WITH) Pogo when he attacked was very good news to me...still reeling about that disaster of an ITT...and even he can't tell you what happened other than he had a BAD DAY. Hey, it happens...I have them more often that I'd like to admit...get up early and head out with my bike for an all day big ride, usually it goes good but sometimes with zero explanation I just can't get out of my own way...and I felt great at the start. So I get it, tho it was heartbreaking to watch (not so for Pogo who redeemed himself against Remco from the Dauphine crushing).

Anyway, tomorrow rest day, thank goodness, I'm whipped! I can actually go for a BIKE RIDE! (I can't blame le Tour for that...the last month has been exceptionally busy for me...I started a must-get-fixed-before the winter rains...the Fascia boards (I just call them the roof 'trim') on the south-side of the house were bad...rotting and some termite damage...we have a vaulted ceiling 1-story, but to get just that one side replaced by roofers was going to be several thousand smackerroos...and now that I'm retired I have way more time than $$...so I made a plan and came up with a way to replace the boards all by myself (our fascia is 2x12's....those are big and heavy, and I had to get them up to the top of the vaulted roof without killing myself...I only have the 1 big ladder, goes up to 16', so that was a challenge without buying a new taller extension ladder (boy are THOSE expensive!). I worked on it for 2 weeks, but made a deal w/ Jeannie that I don't go up on high-ladder work or on the roof if she's not home...so that slowed down the job quite a bit. Also I was gone for most of 2 weeks as I did a short road-tour ride w/ my big brother down to Santa Monica (again, we did that last year too)...his job is kiling him and he only had like 5 days so we re-did that as it's fun, and we wanted to ride by Malibu to see the now non-existang homes on the beach from the fire last Dec. I got home from that and a day later flew to Las Vegas to meet little brother and we drove up to the Grand Canyon North Rim for several days hiking and exploring...right now we are both reeling that the Grand Lodge is GONE! (we stayed in one of the little cabins right there at he Lodge...#219....not sure if it is gone or not). That whole thing is such a shame...the North Rim will never be the same!

OOh...got kind'a wordy there...sorry...I'd best go get the monsters out for their walk before dinner...I'll be back (says me in my best Arnold typing voice)!

  2. Oh, and sorry Rae, didn't mean to NOT give you a shout-out too...hope you are doing well also. I'm really enjoying this years Tour better than usual, as there is really no time-crunch pressure due to the pesky JOB thing...I just renewed my Peacock at the end of June for a year for $29, sweet! That's the same deal they gave me last year, I'll keep that going if they give me the same rate. OK, NOW I really need to scoot...the monsters (Sophie and Abbey) are getting upset that I'm NOT ready to head out the door...they can tell time pretty well.

  3. So today's Stage 11 didn't disappoint! It was a real barn burner all day! I could go on and on, but in a nutshell I was stunned that Wout and Van der Poel couldn't bring back 20 some seconds on the 5 guys in front in over 25 kilometers! Seriously? I can't help but wonder what's going on with Wout...he did have a really great sprint a few days ago against a REAL sprinter, and even tho he couldn't pass for the win he stayed right with him and took 2nd...that was a sign the ol Wout is back...but today I'm not so sure (or maybe it's just the dreaded 'stage after a rest day' thing some riders have). But hey, hats off to the guys in front, and when it came down to Schmid and Abrahamsen continuing to work together to hold off the daring duo (I know the boys in the box kept talking about it but bears more talk...how can ANY 2 or 5 riders keep Van der Poel and Wout at bay for over 25k? If you said it before it happened people would think you were MAD (CRAZY-MAD, not ANGRY-MAD). And when VdP finally got fed up and left the rest Wout didn't even TRY to join...just let him ride away! Somebody really pee'd in Wouts cornflakes this morning! He just wasn't himself...tho he did use a ton of energy to just GET in the break, let-alone stay there...it was a VERY hard day...but those 5 riders in the front who AREN'T VdP and Wout had an even harder day.
OK...enough on that...it was cool to see the 2 guys work all the way and then sprint it out...that's how the breakaway is done ladies and gentlemen! Pay attention all you wanna-be-breakaway riders! Had they not cooperated all the way to the line VdP would have caught them. Well done gentlemen, it's a shame only one of you could win, you both deserved it.
OK, I"m tired...bed time, up at 4am (or so) for the Hautacam and the Tourmalet stage...woo hoo! Vingo beat Pogo the last time they did this...maybe it will give him some confidence...we will see, I'm not sure anybody is beating Pogo...he's just gone beyond superhuman...the stage he won the other day was his ONE HUNDREDTH WIN, and he's only 26 years old! Stage 12, it's gonna be a good-one! Game ON!

  4. Oh, and before I hit the hay, I forgot to mention the Pogo crash at about 4k from the line...that UnoX guy just took him out, saw a move on the right side of the road and just whipped across in front of Pogo taking out his front wheel...we will see tomorrow if anybody talks about it, but it was seriously rude to do that...you just don't cut across in front of another racer like that...ever! I'd think the UCI should fine him...that was just as serious as any rider deviating from his line in a sprint...yes, the speed is lower than in a sprint, but crashing is crashing...and Pogo basically went into the curb...he's very lucky he's not hurt, and if he'd broken his bike, would everybody have still waited? I don't think so. And Ben Healy is the guy who called the 'wait'...good on him! I know TJ was railing against it, but I think Ben was right...and that's just my 2 cents worth. I still think Contador was WRONG taking advantage of Andy Schleck's 'chain-gate'! (yep, I can't remember what I did yesterday, but I still remember THAT!) And that was actually Andy's fault...sort of...we don't really know why his chain jammed...but Pogo was taken out by another rider! Totally different scenario! OK..NOW it's bed time!

  5. Holy Moly Guacamole! What a stage today! We learned a lot...1st, was Pogo really hurt or was he telling the truth that he was fine after his crash yesterday. Asked and answered, in a HUMONGOUS way! 2nd: the vaunted Team Visma fell apart completely, and Team UAE was superb! 3rd: Pogo was as good or better than ANYBODY predicted! Just a jawdropping ride today, wins the stage, his 20th Tour win! He is 6th in the All Time Tour wins list, only 2 away from 5th. He is probably THE GUY to win tomorrows ITT on a mountain too. Who could beat him, Remco? Not on a climb! Vingo? Unless he does a Floyd Landis, I'd say NO. Of todays BIG surprises (to me anyway) was the man who is now in 4th place to Remco's 3rd, who, truth be told, after folding EARLY on the day, came back with incredible tenacity and perseverance!) Lipowitz on Team Bora! Remember that name, I sure will! He was Roglic's man for the mountains, a 21 year old who wasn't even ON the Tour Team until near the start, and he was given the green light to go for it as Roglic folded. And green light it was, he rode himself into 4th place overall, about a minute behind Remco! (I'd say both Vingo AND Remco need to be concerned with this kid in the remaining stages!) What can Lipowitz do tomorrow? It's a mystery...he did great today, can he do it again tomorrow against only the clock? And my last thought: what happened to Sep Kuss? I really thought today would be HIS day to shine for Visma...shepherding Vingo as high on the Hautacam as humanly possible until Vingo left him for his final push...and boy that wasn't the case. Visma had a bad day all around...in fact, I'd say Vingo had the best day of the team...sure he lost another 2 minutes to Pogo, but that doesn't mean he was bad, he was in fact pretty great! Finishing 2nd to Superman? Nothing to be ashamed of there! Pogo is beyond human this year...as he's been proving all season long. That Vingo was pretty much alone while UAE had 2 guys with Pogo long after Vingo was alone says it all for UAE's team strength. Well done guys! OK, I need to get busy...taking Jeannie down to LAX tonight (well, dropping her off tomorrow morning EARLY so we are spending the night in Manhattan Beach). Gonna be some lovely LA traffic, the 405 is ALWAYS bad, and this afternoon won't be any different. But dropping her off at the terminal before 4am means I will be home with the ITT on by maybe 7am! That works for me! OK...been up since 4am watching the stage...gosh, where did the last 8 hours go? Oh, a fun moment here...I had a little musettes bag with snacks for me in the kitchen, was hoping Jeannie would hand it off to me ON THE COUCH (which is my Tour Race location)...she didn't really get it and only tossed me a snack out of the bag. Hey, I'll take it, gotta get my nutrition where I can, keep my Tour Viewing Energy (TVE) at max! (my TVE comes in a slightly different form than the actual racers...this year I'm having Hostess Cherry Cheese Danish's, Entenmanns Cherry mini snack pies and Pound Cakes). The one she tossed was the latter. I thought it was still quite humorous, her much less so. OK...I'm on to my busy day! Stay Hungry my friends! Rae, Susie, hope all is well and you are both enjoying this years Tour!

  6. Stage 13 is in the books, and OMG! Several surprises to me: Roglic is BACK! Ended up in 3rd behind you know...Vingo and Pogo. And Vingo seems back too, he did fantastic today, probably his best stage compared to his rivals so far this Tour, beating Roglic by 44 seconds and just a walloping on Remco, who turned tables with Vingo from the last Time Trial! Then Pogo did what we all knew he would...crushed it, adding 36 seconds to Vingo's deficit, and 1:20 to Roglics (not that he's anywhere in the GC battle at this point). But to me the biggest surprise and excitement point is the young Protege to Roglic...Florian Lipowitz! Losing only to Roglic, Vingo and Pogo (that's pretty amazing performance for a 21 year old in his FIRST Tour)! But best of all, he is now only 6 seconds behind Remco and 3rd OVERALL! WOW WOW WOW! And I'd never even heard of him until the other day! We've had the Pogo/Vingo battle for going on 6 years now, but THIS is a breath of fresh air! Just how far this kid will go will be so fun to watch! Certainly Vingo and Pogo will be watching him from now on! And he's what, just under 3-1/2 minutes from Vingo, where ONE off day in the big mountains to come could bring him up to 2nd in the GC! With the Queen Stage tomorrow (an absolute MONSTER!) and then all the Alps stages yet to go, there is huge potential time loss by ANYBODY who has an off day. I'm just giddy with the excitement of this years race! The Battle for 3rd is ON! (oh, and as an aside, that makes FOUR Stage wins by Pogo ALREADY!)
